Training, education and standards for SEM are handled by the Australasian College of Sports Physicians (ACSP). Training is four years full time or equivalent. Trainees can spend a maximum of two years in any one training post and must spend at least one year interstate or, in the case of New Zealand, in another region.
They must also attend weekly tutorial sessions; design, conduct, publish and present their original research; attend and present at conferences; complete a series of academic modules; and provide high level team and sporting event coverage.
A comprehensive overview of the training program and curriculum is available in the College Manual for candidates on the College’s website, which includes sample examination questions, recommended reading lists, links to sports medicine journals and information on sport specific modules.
