Sport in Australia is popular and widespread, with recent statistics showing that 80% of Australians participate in sport. With a population so involved in sport at an amateur and professional level, SEM physicians are unlikely to be short of work.
SEM physicians are primarily clinicians, although many also incorporate team work and travel, medical administration, event coverage, academic, lecturing and research work, medico-legal and workers compensation assessments and some even take up media involvement.
SEM physicians receive patient referrals from a number of sources including: General practitioners, orthopaedic surgeons other medical specialists, emergency departments, physiotherapists and sporting organisations.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, SEM physicians develop excellent relationships with other health professionals, including orthopaedic surgeons and other medial specialists (e.g. rheumatologists, rehabilitation physicians), physiotherapists, sports dietitians, sports psychologists and sports podiatrists.
