The nature of sports-related injuries is such that patients present to SEM physicians for diagnosis and are then routinely referred on to the relevant member of the multi-disciplinary team e.g. physiotherapist, nutritionist etc for ongoing management. Patient progress then becomes a shared responsibility among the team of SEM professionals led by the SEM physician.
The types of patients SEM physicians see are diverse and include people of all ages including those involved in social exercise and amateur weekend sport, through to professionals in state, national or Olympic teams. SEM physicians working with high profile elite sports people are often faced with complex ethical questions in relation to the often conflicting demands of the patient, the sports team/club, the media, and national sporting organisations.
