Applications for training open at the end of June annually and close at the end of August. All applications are then held until after the September Part 1 examination results are announced. Applicants must pass the Part 1 examination to be eligible for entry into the program. (Part 1 examinations are scheduled on the first Saturdays of March and September each year with closing dates of 30th November for the March session and 31st May for the September session.) Successful applicants fulfilling all requirements and prerequisites are then interviewed and, if successful, offered training, which commences on the first Monday of February the following year.
Before submitting an application, it is necessary to complete the requirement of basic training, which entails completion of the equivalent of three years general medical and surgical experience since graduation. At least two of these three years must have been in full time positions in hospitals or environments approved by the College’s Board of Censors.
