Psychiatry is an extremely flexible specialty and in general work can be tailored to suit specific interests and lifestyle preferences. There are few emergencies which require immediate attention and any on-call tends to be minimal. Work takes place during normal business hours. There are a number of practice options available. Approximately two thirds of psychiatrists practice predominantly in the private sector with one third mainly in public practice. There is scope for administrative, research and teaching roles in addition to clinical work. Subspecialties are available in areas such as forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry (psychiatry in the medically unwell), neuropsychiatry and psychiatry of old age. Work may be performed on an individual basis or as part of a multidisciplinary team. Psychiatrists are generally financially secure. Because the demand for consultant psychiatrists greatly exceeds supply, it is possible to rise to a high-level administrative post (e.g. director of a service) much more quickly than in other specialties.
