Trainees may enter the basic training program any time after completion of the first postgraduate year of training. New trainees based in Australia can now register for the training program online. Employment is to be secured at a hospital accredited for basic training independent of input from the college. Trainees are required to register with the college annually from the commencement of the second year of basic training.
Selection into advanced training varies by state, region and subspecialty. Traditionally trainees have applied to individual hospitals for positions and then to the college for prospective approval. In recent times some specialty training bodies (Specialist Advisory Committees, or SACs) have introduced regional or statewide selection processes.
Every June, the RACP Training Positions Supplement is released providing information on basic and advanced training positions in hospitals in Australia and New Zealand.
