Pathology trainees have many options for subspecialty training. All pathology specialties share a common basic training pathway and approach to education. The College conducts training and examinations for the following sub-disciplines of pathology:
In addition the College offers post-Fellowship diplomas in Cytopathology, Molecular Pathology and Forensic Pathology, and a special Diploma in Forensic Medicine for non-Fellows.
There is a current worldwide shortage of pathologists, and in Australia there are more medical students wanting to do pathology than there are training positions, with approximately 55 new pathologists completing training each year.
In general, all disciplines of pathology provide a good work/life balance for family and outside interests. The availability of part-time work and flexible working hours make pathology a good option for those with family commitments.
