Training Program - Paediatrics Specialty Training Program

Detailed information regarding the training program may be found online in the 'mango book'. The requirements for trainees commencing from 2008 onwards are also now available.

Basic training is 3 years full time and may be entered following the completion of internship.

Advanced training in general paediatrics is for three years following completion of basic training. A minimum of two of these must spent working in core clinical terms. Core clinical terms include four compulsory six month rotations which include:

  • Work in a rural/regional centre
  • Work in an acute care setting such as an ICU or emergency department
  • Work in a community and child health area such as community paediatrics and child protection.
  • Training in clinical specialties at a major metropolitan hospital.

The remaining year of training may be spent doing tasks such as research, further clinical work in specialties of interest or even overseas volunteer work. These activities must be pre-approved by the specialist advisory committee which overseas training.
