The workplace - Paediatrics Specialty Training Program

Paediatric practice occurs in a variety of settings such as a suburban private practice, on the ward in a tertiary hospital or in the emergency department. In the outpatient setting these specialists will be confronted by variety of problems. There is a focus on growth and development and management of behavioural issues which is unique to paediatrics. The range of conditions is broad and markedly different from those managed by adult physicians. Some patients, such as those with cystic fibrosis have chronic, life threatening conditions requiring frequent review while others may present with bed wetting. Frequently the job of the paediatrician is to re-assure worried parents that their well child is normal. In the emergency department and inpatient settings paediatricians may encounter anything from a premature baby in respiratory distress to a child with pneumonia due to a peanut occluding their right main bronchus, or simply a multitude of irritable toddlers with a cough and runny nose. The variety of work is diverse as is the practice setting. Paediatricians may either be referred patients or be the primary carer.
