Lifestyle and Practice Options - Paediatrics Specialty Training Program

Paediatricians may practice in private or public settings or in a combination of the two. The majority of paediatricians tend to work between 50 - 64 hours per week with few working any more hours than this . On call is an issue for those working in a public hospital and in private practice. Most on call will be handled by registrars on site, although occasionally consultant input is required. Approximately 44% of all paediatricians are general paediatricians. There are a multitude of paediatric subspecialties, the most popular being:

  • Neonatal (17% of all paediatric specialists)
  • Developmental and behavioural (8.8%)
  • Respiratory Medicine (7.5%)
  • Paediatric haematology/oncology (6.8%).
