The doctor-patient relationship - Dermatology Specialty Training Program

Dermatology involves a high level of patient contact, and in many cases there is long term ongoing care for patients with chronic skin conditions. Patients of all ages are encountered, from a baby with nappy rash to a young woman with cutaneous lupus to an elderly man with malignant melanoma. Dermatologists provide an important counseling role for their patients who often suffer significant psychological distress from their very visible disease. Therefore, good communication skills and an empathetic ear are vital.
