Following internship, doctors usually spend another one or two years as residents (RMOs – resident medical officers, or HMOs – hospital medical officers) rotating between different clinical departments and different hospitals within the public system in order to broaden their experience. By the end of PGY2 or PGY3, many junior doctors will seek admission to a vocational (or “specialty”) training program.

The period spent in the public hospital system prior to entering a vocational training program is referred to as pre-vocational training. Note that general practice can now also be considered a specialty, in that a period of vocational training, in addition to pre-vocational experience, is required.
