After completion of medical school in Australia, graduates receive provisional medical registration with the relevant State Medical Board. In order to receive full medical registration, one year in the medical workforce as an intern (or PGY1 – Postgraduate Year 1) is required.
The intern year takes place primarily in major public teaching hospitals, and involves a series of rotations in different clinical departments, within guidelines provided by the State Postgraduate Medical Councils. For example, in Victoria, an internship consists of at least 48 weeks of supervised clinical experience, comprising core terms of at least 10 weeks of medicine, 10 weeks of surgery and 8 weeks of emergency medicine.
