The medical specialty component of premiums

The medical specialty component of premiums

  • generally reflects that doctors who practice more complex procedures are at an increased risk of litigation, and are exposed to larger claims
  • some indemnity providers have relatively few risk categories into which they fit many specialties, whereas others have an individual risk category for most specialties
  • may vary from provider to provider, and from year to year, but is quite stable

The risk category of your specialty of choice will give you some insight into the likely cost of your premium, and to some extent the risk of litigation.
