The medical indemnity crisis earlier this decade (which in some cases saw doctors paying more than a third of their income as indemnity premiums) led to the introduction of a number of government schemes aimed at keeping indemnity insurance affordable. For example, the Premium Support Scheme provides a subsidy to doctors whose indemnity premiums exceed 7.5% of their private billings income: 80% of the amount by which the premium exceeds this level is subsidised by the government.
