The workforce study Supply and Demand for Anaesthesia Services by economics consultants, Access Economics project a widening gap between demand and supply of Anaesthesia Services, rising from a very small shortage of full-time equivalent (FTE) anaesthetists in 2008.
The results also confirm a significant maldistribution of anaesthetists between urban and rural areas. Nearly half of the expected increase in demand can be attributed to demographic change, including ageing of the population.
