The Federal Government has boosted spending on a scheme designed to attract locum obstetricians to work in rural Australia. The Specialist Obstetrician Locum Scheme (SOLS) is a government initiative which pays half the cost of employing a locum, as well as their airfare and medical registration. In addition the scheme provides assistance with the bureaucratic requirements of locating and hiring an appropriate locum.
This government initiative has been rather successful in maintaining uninterrupted obstetric services in rural areas and allows local obstetricians a chance to attend conferences or take a break.
