The AMA Victoria provides a peer support program for its members. This is a phone counseling service provided for doctors by doctors and is intended for use by those distressed about issues relating to their work. This idea was originally raised in an AMA Doctors-in-Training subdivision meeting. It has long been recognised that peer support is lacking in the medical profession. Long working hours and the unique types of pressures faced by doctors highlight the need for such a program. The advantage of peer support is that a fellow doctor will appreciate the particular stressors and circumstances faced by those using the service.
AMA Victoria's Peer Support Service volunteer counselors were trained by Lifeline and participate in regular ongoing training sessions. The service is available from 8am to 11pm every day of the year and be reached by calling 1300 853 338.
