Ministerial Review of Victorian Medical Workforce: Key Findings

Posted by Cosmin Florescu | 15.04.08

The Ministerial Review of Victorian Public Health Medical Staff has recently been released. The report highlights the myriad of challenges facing the Victorian public health system’s medical workforce and made 71 different recommendations.

Issues relating to work environment particularly low medical staff morale are highlighted. Concerns by medical staff were voiced regarding the work culture of public hospitals which many doctors felt places greater emphasis on throughput and meeting budgets than quality of care. Changes in the private sector are also likely to place a strain on the public sector’s ability to retain senior staff. Many of the factors which have made public practice more attractive in comparison, such as teaching, clinical meetings and complex medical problems are now becoming available in private hospitals.

The review was headed by Dr. Sue Morey, Professor Bruce Barraclough and Mr. Alan Hughes. The report may be read in its entirety here.
