The AMA 2006 Safe Hours Audit highlighted the need for changes in medical rostering for hospital doctors. The report found that nearly two thirds of hospital doctors are working hours which expose them to significant amounts of fatigue which may in turn lead to increased medical error rates. Excessive fatigue can not only compromise patient care, but may also put at risk the personal health and safety of doctors.
The AMA has developed a Fatigue Assessment Tool. This is an excellent online resource which allows doctors to determine whether they are at risk of excess fatigue. It is available online here.
