On 8 April 2006 the Australian Government announced that the first rural and regional Medical School in Victoria will be established at Deakin University, located on the Geelong campus at Waurn Ponds.
The medical school will offer a graduate entry program for mature-aged students with links to regional and rural Australia.
The campaign to establish a Medical School commenced more that two years ago led by the Dean of Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences, Professor John Catford.
