Masters during PGY1/2?

I'm interested in doing a Masters in Int'l Public Health part-time during internship and residency and was wondering if this is advisable. What have people heard/read/been advised about doing that? - is it possible to do a course with the workload of internship/residency/having to go rural/needing to prepare for training programs? Is an MIPH even useful in the 1st place (I'm thinking of going into Ob/Gyn later)? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amy,

Not sure about the practicalities of doing a masters in PGY1/2 but if you are intereseted in O&G and want to do a masters, UNSW has a two year part time masters by coursework in reproductive medicine - something I have been thinking about as well. Like you though not sure if doing it in the next two years is feasible, although this course is designed to be flexible around work commitments and is done externally so may fit in better with rotations - not sure though.

Cheers

Hi Amy

From All accounts Intern year is hard enough (and important for registration) with out finding time for study. Perhaps after that year while most people are getting ready to choos a path, a masters might help (esp if clinically relevant). Depending on which uni you attend (and if you are a domestic or international student). UQ is desperately trying to recruit students for its masters progam..(not enough MBBS/PhD students)

If you are from UQ you probably know this already but:

  1. Between years 2 and 3 is most recommended (preclinical MASTERS Clinical)
  2. It takes 1.5 years. (part time end of year 2, 1 year off to research, finish writing up at start of 3rd year)
  3.  Free - No tuition fees at all
  4. Choose ANY field you like

Pros

  • Shorter time (only delay graduation by a year)
  • Free
  • Any dicipline
  • Not stringent criteria for entry (passing grade and desire for research)

Cons

  • Graduation is delayed a year
  • Therefore a delay in potential income
  • As it is masters - very little chance of acquiring a scholarship (you'll need you're own support)
  • It is research not course based

Hope this helps

Cheers,

Rob
