Dr. Jeremy Ryan
Name: Dr. Jeremy Ryan
Career stage: Consultant
Location: Melbourne, Victoria and Warrigal and Sale in regional Victoria
Position:
Medical Specialty: Gastroenterology and Hepatology
What do you enjoy most about your specialty?
I enjoy the procedural work including gastroscopy and colonoscopy .It is investigative procedural work. It requires a technical skill that you enjoy doing because you gain an expertise and do it well.
What are the challenges in gastroenterology?
The challenge is always to come up with a solution to the patient's problem.
What are the things that helped you decide on your career?
I think it was a combination of "thinking and doing". This made it an attractive option. I had exposure to a number of people who were positive influences on me.
Do you have any advice for graduates?
There is a quote "if you do what you like doing you'll never work another day".
There is something to be said for this.
If you enjoy doing it, it is work but not a chore. You need to find something sufficiently challenging as you will be doing it for a long time. Other careers involve change every few years but in medicine people tend to do the same thing for years. Find something that engages you that can last a long time.
