What are the great things about specialising in General Practice?

It’s very flexible in that I can say to the surgery that, look, I’m only going to work until three o’clock today because I’ve got my son’s playschool or something on that I want to go to so it’s got flexibility that makes it rewarding in regard to family time. From another point of view you can get special interests and you can diversify so you don’t have to just do General Practice you can do General Practice with a focus on obstetrics. So I think really the things that make General Practice such a wonderful career and the elements of it that make it so good is that it’s got flexibility, it’s got lots of intellectual stimulation, it’s good for lifestyle and it’s also really good if you want to travel because you can just say “I’m just going to go to Broome and do a locum” or go to Darwin and do a locum so there’s lots of things that make it really exciting.

What is special, unique or different about General Practice?

I think it all comes back to the fact that it’s so varied, I just don’t know what my day is going to bring and that’s the thing that excites you because you get constant new challenges and you see things that you haven’t seen before and then you have to try and work out what’s going on. So it’s the intellectual stimulation and the reward from finding out and treating someone and making them better. Probably the things about General Practice that make it a good choice for me is that I love having new challenges, I love being able to solve problems and that’s what you do in General Practice everyday.
