What do you enjoy most about general practice?
The interaction with people and the long term relationships. General practice is a very exciting and challenging career as you never know what situation walks through the door.
What are some of the things that helped you decide on a training program?
I came to Australia in 1994 after I completed my training in anaesthetics. I was offered a job in the hospital emergency department because of my anaesthetic training. I loved emergency department work . I loved the people contact. I became ambivalent about continuing anaesthetics. I decided to take up general practice as a specialty.
I was very impressed with the quality of care in australia. I had to sit all my exams again- the AMC and Fellowship exams. With hard work I was able to pass them first go. I secured a place in the training program for general practice and obstetrics and gynaecology. I chose general practice so I could support the wider community.
I also could use my training in anaesthetics and emergency medicine to help in a local setting. I enjoy minor surgical procedures and emergency work. This is an exciting part of general practice.
What are the challenges of general practice?
There is the diagnostic challenge and the paperwork challenge particularly medico-legal reports.
Do you have any advice for young and aspiring GP's?
Go for your dream.
