Dr. Cosmin Florescu

Name: Dr. Cosmin Florescu

Career stage: Registrar

Location: Melbourne

Position:

Medical Specialty: Diagnostic Radiology

What attracted you to this training program?

I was exposed to a lot of radiology teaching during internship and my first resident year. I thought it was an interesting area of medicine and talked to a few radiology registrars and consultants about it. They all seemed to like their job a lot and their enthusiasm must have rubbed off.

What are some of the challenges of being in your training program?

There’s a lot to learn and the learning curve is extremely steep. The work is quite different from anything I’ve done before so everything is quite new to me. At the moment I’m only in my third week and it feels a bit like being an intern all over again.

What are some of the things that you did to help you decide and plan your career to get into this training program?

I made sure I considered a range of different specialties and tried out a few clinical rotations in things which interested me. One of the difficult things with radiology is that it’s not possible to do a resident rotation in it before applying. I made sure that I talked to a few registrars about the pros and cons of each specialty before making my mind up. I also got involved in some research which was both good for my CV and a great way to get another idea of what radiology was about.

What advice do you have for students interested in your training program?

Make sure you consider everything you’re interested in before fully commiting to and one specialty. It’s important to consider what radiology actually involves before deciding that’s the only specialty for you. Check out the profile on this site and talk to some registrars and consultants about their careers. If you think you’d be happy doing what they’re doing then it’s probably the right specialty for you. Getting some research under your belt, particularly radiology research will probably increase your chances of getting a spot.

What do you do outside of medicine to relax?

I jump on the mymedicalcareer community.
