Name: Dr. Alice Murkies
Career stage: Consultant
Location: Melbourne
Position:
Medical Specialty: General Practice
What do you enjoy most about general pracatice?
The ability to develop a long term patient relationship is very important to me, as is observing and advising on the many physical and emotional issues of life.
What are challenges of general practice?
For me the biggest challenges are the paperwork, including audits and filling out forms, and ensuring that I always abide by changing standards and guidelines.
What are some of the things that helped you decide on a training program?
The rotating residency program in 1977/78 allowed me to work in different fields and gave me the experience and flexibility required to choose a specialty. I decided on general practice.
Do you have any advice for young or aspiring GP's?
Reflect on which environments make you feel happy and inquire further. It is important to remember that you can't make a mistake, whatever you choose, you will benefit from the experience.
Remember that you change over time and your interests will most likely change. General practice allows flexibility for the changes that occur within your life.
